About the Academy Internship Program

The Academy Internship Program offers both undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to address critical and timely government challenges and consider careers in public service.

Internships are unpaid but provide opportunities to gain experience in the Academy operations and learn from leaders in all areas of public administration. We offer internships throughout the year and accommodate all academic schedules, including semesters (spring, summer, fall) and quarters. The description of the internships is below. Internship with the Office of Fellow Engagement and Communications

This internship provides the opportunity to work directly with the Director of Fellow Engagement and Communications on a variety of tasks related to the Fellows and Board members, such as researching specific information, writing and editing requested materials, attending project panel meetings, and shadowing a staff member on other projects and Fellow initiatives.

Internship with Academy Study Teams

The intern will be assigned to shadow a project staff on one or more Academy studies. Tasks will include but are not limited to reviewing the literature, attending team meetings and study-related interviews, writing notes to clarify the intern’s understanding of study topics, reviewing various documents, and providing support for the day-to-day operations. Internship with the Office of Strategic Initiatives – Grand Challenges, Agile Government Center

This internship provides the opportunity to work directly with the Director of Strategic Initiatives on various tasks related to the Grand Challenges and strategic initiatives such as the Agile Government Center. The duties will include researching specific information, writing, editing requested materials, and attending topical meetings and convenings. Other interesting and rewarding tasks may surface during the internship.

Internship with the Center for Intergovernmental Partnerships

This internship provides the opportunity to work directly with the Director of the Center for Intergovernmental Partnerships on various tasks related to connecting and collaborating with federal, state, local, and territorial governments and government associations at all levels on capacity building, roundtable discussions, and convenings. The duties will include researching specific information, writing, and editing requested materials, and attending topical meetings and convenings at the state and local levels.

Internship with the Office of Business Development and Philanthropy

This internship provides the opportunity to work directly with the Director of Development and Philanthropy on a variety of tasks related to the organization’s role to help expand the established development portfolio and help create a robust fundraising and philanthropy component. The intern will be responsible for researching specific information, writing, editing requested materials, and attending topical meetings and convenings. They will gain insights into internal operations related to grant writing, proposal development, and communications strategies. Other tasks that may surface during the internship will be exciting and rewarding.

Social Media/Marketing Internship

This internship provides an opportunity to work with the Manager of Communications on marketing duties to expand the Academy’s visibility and brand awareness. The intern will be a member of a top-notch public and media relations team focused on developing the Academy’s brand and expanding awareness of the Academy with government agencies, legislators, and public administrators at the federal, state, and local levels. In this role, the intern will be an integral member of this team and will have the opportunity to perform many valuable tasks directly related to the goals of the Academy. The duties may include assisting with the design and execution of social media campaigns, using tools for collecting data, tracking analytics for social media campaigns, and creating social media postings.
